Back in 1932, you couldn’t find the premium, wholesome bread that we love today. That is, until Hermann and Betty Dreyer came along and changed that. They believed in a better loaf of bread. Hermann mastered the art of handcrafted artisan bread in Germany—a trade he brought with him when he moved to Los Angeles. He and his wife started a small retail shop that was half-bakery, half-grocery-store, and full-on delightful. They called it Oroweat® Baking Company: “oro-“ meaning gold, and “weat” meaning, well, wheat. When Ed Nagel of the neighboring Berkenkamp Bread Bakery saw the Dreyers’ whole wheat loaves on display, he got a taste of his competition. The bread was excellent, but it just wasn’t selling—yet. Ed, a businessman at heart, had a fresh idea. He partnered with the Dreyers, and Oroweat® Whole Grain Breads was established, satisfying appetites for premium breads across the entire West Coast and as far as Alaska. To this day, though Hermann and Betty no longer make it themselves, Oroweat® is still committed to bringing you awesomely delicious and nutritious bread you can believe in— so you can live your life and love your loaf.
Every slice of Oroweat® Bread is made with high-quality ingredients, just the way the Dreyers wanted it. We use no high fructose corn syrup and no artificial colors or flavors, and many varieties are made with whole grains. (Whole grains are any grain that includes 100% of the original kernel. Yup, the whooole thing.) That’s how we bring you a more nutritious and delicious loaf that’s hearty but soft—bread that we’re proud to bake, and that you’re proud to buy. If you are what you eat, then you’re pretty awesome. And now we have even more to take pride in: our company, Bimbo Bakeries USA, has been named 2018 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Bread and the environment are two things Bimbo Bakeries USA is most passionate about, so it’s a huge honor to be recognized as a leader in energy management within the baking industry.
