Four women in kitchen with Oroweat bread and sandwiches

Why Oroweat?

From the sunbaked fields where our seeds are grown to the busy homes where our bread is served, we strive to make a positive impact every day. It’s a philosophy that extends beyond our bread to the world around us. We consistently work to improve the quality of our ingredients, reduce our carbon footprint, and give back to the communities we serve.

It all started back in 1932, when Hermann and Betty Dreyer opened a small retail shop in Los Angeles that was half bakery, half grocery store—and full-on delightful. Back then, you couldn’t find the premium bread that we love today. By starting small, the couple was able to give each brick-oven-baked loaf the attention it deserved. Today, though Hermann and Betty no longer make it themselves, Oroweat® is still committed to bringing you bread you can believe in—so you can live your life and love your loaf.

Oroweat Baked the Right Way Transcript

At Oroweat, we start with one question: “What would grandma do?”

Bake the right way. Period.

Shortcuts? Short answer. Never

Yo los haría todos: whole grains, multigranos, y todo tipo de granos

Toppings? Oh yeah. Toppings.

Grandma would use time tested recipes.

So yeah. That’s what grandma would do.

Now start eating what grandma would bake.

Oroweat. Baked the Right Way for Over 80 Years.

  • ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year: BBU has been named ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for six years in a row. Bread and the environment are two things Bimbo Bakeries USA is most passionate about, so it’s a huge honor to be recognized as a leader in energy management within the baking industry. BBU is the first major baking company to receive this recognition from the EPA. To learn more about our ENERGY STAR® partnership, visit energystar.gov/about.
  • VPPA with INVENERGY: Backed by Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) and Renewable Energy Credits (RECs), BBU matches 100% of its electricity usage for US operations with renewable Wind Energy.
  • 18 ENERGY STAR Certified Facilities: Achieved certification for superior energy efficiency at 18 BBU facilities, setting the record for the most ENERGY STAR certified plants of any company in any industry.
  • EPA GREEN POWER Partner: BBU ranks 35 out of 100 total partners in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership. This partnership encourages companies to use green power to reduce the environmental impacts associated with conventional electricity.

  • By removing the inner wrapping, we are able to commit to our sustainability efforts and eliminate 40% of the plastic used in our packaging for each loaf. This reduces the amount of plastic from our packaging that will be thrown away into landfills. In addition, based on testing we have done, you should not experience any change in the quality or freshness of the product.

Sustainability Is Baked Into Everything We Do

At Oroweat®, we pride ourselves on our ability to find sustainable, common-sense solutions to the issues that affect our business and the world around us. And now we have even more to take pride in: our brand is part of Bimbo Bakeries USA (BBU). BBU has committed to initiatives that will help reduce energy use across the company and is communicating those efforts externally to foster real change in the industry.

Included below are just some of our current sustainability initiatives and accomplishments:

  • Philadelphia Park Cleanup: The Oroweat® team worked together to spruce up Carroll Park in Philadelphia for Spring. Activities included planting garden beds, weeding the exercise path, painting benches, planting trees and picking up litter.
  • Feeding America: 17 million pounds of food donated to Feeding America in 2018 through various events and partnerships coordinated by BBU.
  • Meals that Matter: 2.6 million people fed last year through disaster relief partnership with Tyson. As part of the initiative, mobile cook trucks were deployed to areas impacted by natural disasters. Tyson provided the protein and BBU provided the buns to feed impacted individuals and families.
  • Good Neighbor Project: 37 bakeries and distribution centers completed in 2018 as part of the annual Good Neighbor Project. Through the program, our associates can give back to the communities they serve in a variety of thoughtful and creative ways.
  • Please Touch Museum: 2 exhibits sponsored at the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia as part of the museum’s larger initiative to help teach children about the importance of healthy living and financial literacy. Over half a million kids have participated to date.
  • Collegiate Scholarships: 50 one-time college scholarships awarded annually to associates’ eligible children, grandchildren, and legal dependents, totaling $150,000 each year.
  • Charitable Donations: $200,000+ in associate donations to charitable organizations across the country.
  • Renewable Energy Initiative: 100% renewable energy will be used to power all U.S. operations by 2020. BBU will become the first baking company in America to achieve this milestone.
